We are moving right
along in our journey through A Wrinkle in Time. This week we will
read chapters 9, 10 and 11. Our focus will be on journal writing; the students
will write journal entries from the perspective of various characters
throughout the week.
In Grammar, we will practice classifying sentences applying concepts covered in
Chapter 8. The students will be assessed on this chapter on Friday. We will
also work on various writing activities that replace the word “said” for more
creative and detailed verbs to show dialogue.
The proverb that the kids will learn this week is “the pen is mightier than the
sword”. I encourage you to discuss these proverbs with your kids at home. You
will be impressed with their insightful interpretations and
the creative hypothetical scenarios they think of! As always, we will continue
covering Latin and Greek words. We are almost at 100!
History/Geography: Last week, the students
were very pleased to have read about the Union’s victory over the Confederacy
in the Civil War! Now that this war is over, we will read about post-war events
and struggles. This week, the students will learn about the conspiracies
related to Lincoln’s assassination as well as the struggle over reconstruction.
The kids will also understand what sharecropping was, and why it happened in the
South.
Science: This week, we will begin our short unit on the
reproductive system. Our objectives for the week are as follows:
Monday: The students will be introduced to reproduction and
the life cycle by means of identifying the stages involved in a seed turning
into a plant with flowers, and an egg turning into an organism.
Tuesday: The students will understand that all organisms pass
through a sequence of developmental stages called a “life cycle”, which
includes the stages of: birth, growth, reproduction, and death. They will be
reminded that fertilization occurs when a male and female gamete meet. (This
will be review from the Plants unit earlier in the school year.) Click here for a copy of the reading.
Wednesday: We will focus on the basic meaning of sexual
and asexual reproduction. The students will learn about how various animals
reproduce. Terms such as spawning and external/internal
fertilization will be introduced.
Thursday: The students will review the information about the
reproductive system by reading about it in kid-friendly science readers.
Friday: The
students will review the stages of the life cycle by means of playing a board
game. (There will not be a test over this content.)
Our unit next week will be over genetics! I know the kids
will really enjoy learning about this fascinating subject in science!
