In
Grammar, we will continue focusing on classifying Pattern 3 sentences, which
include a subject noun, transitive verb, direct object, and indirect object. We
will also practice punctuating quotes that appear at the beginning, middle, and
end of text. We will end the week writing on a creative writing prompt.
I
hope your child is enjoying our current novel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The
Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The students are practicing their
discussion skills with peers by participating in literature circle discussions
each day. The culminating project is a board game which will be completed in
their groups. The students are aware of the due date and the expectation to be working
on it throughout the course of the novel.
The
proverb the students are focusing on this week is “A bird in the hand is worth
two in the bush”. They did an excellent job discussing this saying and creating
situations that would apply to it. We are continuing our Latin and Greek words,
getting closer and closer to 100! I encourage your children to be studying
these words and their derivatives regularly at home.
History/Geography: Graded history tests will be
coming home this week; please ensure that your child completes corrections by
Monday, May 3rd. We are continuing our study of Westward Expansion
After the Civil War; your child is learning all about the development of the
transcontinental railroad and how it changed the United States. We will also
take a look at the cattle frontier and why ranching was a big contributor to
economic changes in the south. On Wednesday, the students will act out the Homestead
Act in the field with all three fifth grade classes! We will end the week discussing
the hardships that farmers endured during this time in history.
Science: Your child will be getting
their graded Genetics tests back.; corrections are due on Monday, May 3rd.
We are beginning our Matter and Chemistry unit this week. Your child will be
introduced to elements and their symbols, understand the basics of atomic
structure, learn about Dmitri Mendeleev and his creation of the Period Table of
Elements, and analyze the way the Periodic Table is organized. Stay tuned!
