The students will be spending Monday and Tuesday finishing
up their group retelling books of A Wrinkle in Time. On Wednesday, we
will begin reading our next novel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the
Witch, and the Wardrobe. The students will complete literature circle
sheets throughout this novel which will provide them opportunities to dig deep
and discuss meaningful themes and events throughout their reading. They will
also work on a board-game project throughout the course of the reading, which
will serve as a culminating assessment for the novel. You will see a rubric
come home about this in the next few days.
In Grammar this week, your children will learn about
indirect objects. This will lead nicely into their understanding for Pattern 3
sentences, which include a subject noun, transitive verb, indirect object, and
a direct object. We will spend a significant amount of time practicing
classifying these. We will also delve into the rules associated with punctuating
quotes. Expect to see grammar homework coming home each night this week.
The idiom your child will learn is "to bend over backward"; please try implementing these idiomatic phrases at home! We will continue learning the last 25 Latin/Greek words, as well.
History/Geography: Can
you believe our study of the Civil War is over?! The students seemed to really
enjoy learning about this tenuous era in our nation’s history. They’ve been
working busily on their study guides in preparation for Wednesday’s test. On
Thursday, we will begin our next unit on Westward Expansion after the Civil
War. We will spend Thursday studying the related geography for this unit, and
Friday we will learn why settlers continued to go west with a focus on mining.
Science: This
will be an exciting week in science! We are continuing our study of the
fascinating topic of Genetics. We will learn about Gregor Mendel, who was a
Austrian monk and scientist responsible for very important findings in the study of inheritance. He discovered that mutations in DNA occur in pairs,
and that an organism receives one gene from each parent. On Tuesday, the
students will participate in an intriguing science experiment involving the
extraction of DNA from strawberries! Please ask your child to share all that
he/she learned from this hands-on experience!
