Week of February 25 - March 1


 Language Arts: We will be covering chapter 2 of Growing Your Vocabulary. It is titled, “A Matter of Life and Death”.

In Grammar this week, we will be focusing on verb tense by studying regular and irregular verbs. The students will continue to practice the classification of Pattern 2 sentences with transitive verbs and direct objects. We will be focusing on the writing traits of conventions and presentation throughout the week. In reading we are moving forward with Where the Red Fern Grows, focusing ways that Billy is growing as a character. The students are making great text to text, text to self, and text to world connections! We are continuing to learn more of the Latin and Greek words, almost reaching 75! The students will be tested on Latin and Greek roots #56-75 on Wednesday, February 8th. Click here for the study guide. The proverb we will discuss this week is, “put the cart before the horse”. Try implementing these sayings at home!

History/Geography: We are moving along in our study of The Civil War. The tension is building between the North and South, and the students are eager to learn about how the war broke out during this tenuous era. This week, the students will have a chance to read excerpts from a wonderful primary source: The Lincoln/Douglas Debates. They will also learn about Fort Sumter, which was the first battle of the war. In groups, the students will spend time comparing and contrasting the North and South, as well as reflecting upon how families were affected by the war. Be sure to ask your child what “A Brother’s War” means.

Science: We are moving swiftly through our Muscular Systems unit. The children are learning about the location and functions of various muscles in the human body. Listen for information about smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscles. We will also differentiate between voluntary and involuntary muscles. The test over this body system will be on Friday of this week. We will spend a significant amount of class time reviewing the content. You should see your child spending time labeling their blank human body sheet at home.
