In grammar, we will continue
focusing on classifying and diagramming sentences with compound parts. The
students will take a short quiz sometime early-on this week over the concepts
that we’ve been practicing. The students will begin writing their expository
paragraph on Digitopolis this week. This will be structured very similarly to
the paragraph on Dictionopolis. We will work on parts of this as a class (such
as the three point sentence), and each child will be responsible for developing
each point on their own. The length of this paragraph should be the same length
as the Dictionopolis paragraph.
Have you
been keeping up with us on our exciting journey through The Phantom Tollbooth
with Milo, Tock, and the funny Humbug? This week, we will read three more
chapters and focus on the literary elements of symbolism and personification.
This week, the
proverb the students will learn is, “A watched pot never boils”. We will get
through several more Latin and Greek words. The test over words #26-50 will be
during the last week before break. (This is coming sooner than we think! J)
It’s never too early to begin studying!
History/Geography: Can
you believe that we are already finished with our Exploration unit and are
moving onto another fascinating history
topic?! This week, we will begin our study of Early Russia. The students will
begin the by learning the geography of Russia. They will gain an understanding for Russia’s beginnings by identifying
the Vikings and Mongols; we will discuss how Russia’s culture was reshaped by
these people. The children will learn about Ivan the Great and Ivan the
Terrible. On Friday, we will identify similarities and differences between these
two important historical figures.
Science: How is
your child’s cell model project coming along? I have heard several very
creative mediums that the students are using to construct their cells! I can’t
wait to see them on Tuesday, December 4th.
This week, your children will be
learning about mitosis! Mitosis is the process of cell division. Cells
reproduce by replicating and dividing themselves. The stages of mitosis are: Interphase,
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokinesis. The students will
learn about what happens during each stage by means of viewing presentations, taking
notes, reading the textbook, and watching video clips (mitosis in real time!).
The students will also participate in a hands-on manipulation of mitosis using chromosomes
(pipe cleaners) and spindle fibers (yarn) to simulate a cell replicating and
dividing!
We aren’t finished studying the functions
of organelles within a plant cell! The students will be revisiting the function
of each organelle in the plant cell throughout the week. This information will
be assessed with the mitosis content next week. Each student has a foldable
with flash cards as well as a blank cell for labeling inside a sheet protector.
