Language Arts: We are moving along in our
study of poetry this week. The students will read and discuss classic poems,
such as “The Tyger” and “A Poison Tree” by William Blake. We will also spend
time writing poetry, such as limericks and diamantes.
The
students will be tested on chapter 5 of grammar on Monday of next week, so this week will be spent reviewing the
concepts covered over the past couple of weeks. We will practice classifying
sentences and review what we learned about syntax and compound sentences. These
concepts will be reviewed with a fun game of BINGO!
History/Geography: Our Westward Expansion unit
is fruitfully moving along. The kids are especially enjoying the Oregon Trail
simulation as it is teaching them (the hard way) how pioneers faced great
dangers and tough decisions on their journey west. This week we will continue
learning about the trek west and what it entailed for the brave voyagers.
On
Thursday, we will be attending the field trip to Sister Moses, a play about
Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. The students will complete a
reflection assignment after attending the performance. Ask your child to tell
you all about this theatrical experience!
Science: This week in science, the
students will continue discussing the differences between the lifecycle of
gymnosperms and angiosperms, focusing on angiosperms and dicots and monocots. On
Wednesday, the students will observe a lily dissection! This will be a great
learning experience for the students as it will provide them a better understanding
for angiosperm reproduction, parts of a flower, and life cycle of a plant. On
Friday, we will begin reviewing for the Plants test, which will be on Tuesday, January 29th. You
will see a study guide come home, which should be completed thoroughly. Class
notes are also an important study tool that you should see coming home.
