Language Arts: Because we have finished the novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, we will be spending time this week
discussing events, themes, and symbols from the book and writing an expository
essay. Your child will be choosing one question from a list of prompts we’ve
discussed to write their essay on; please discuss your child’s prompt with
him/her at home!
In Grammar, we will complete chapter 7 of Shurley by practicing
classifying pattern two sentences and analyzing verb tense. The students
understand the importance of helping verbs in assessing the tense of a
sentence, so this would be a helpful reminder if your child is struggling at
home.
The Latin and Greek quiz over words 51-75 will be on Thursday of
this week. You should see your child studying this at home a great deal. The
study guide has been given to the students and can also be found as a link on
this page (on the right). We will discuss the idiom, “face the music” this week.
History/Geography: We are moving along in our study of The
Civil War! This will be a week of very significant events from this tenuous
time in our nation’s history. We will cover the Anaconda Strategy, the
Peninsular Campaign, the battle of Antietam, the Emancipation Proclamation, and
the battle of Fredericksburg. Please ask your child to share all that he/she is
learning about the Civil War at school! (We will continue with this unit after
spring break.)
Science: You should expect your child to show you
his/her Muscular System test today. The class average was 93! Way to go,
scholars! Test corrections are due on Friday. This week, we will begin our
exciting unit on the Nervous System! The students will learn the difference
between the Central and Peripheral nervous systems, as well as understand the
parts and functions of a neuron (nerve cell). They will even build a neuron out
of candy on Wednesday! We will end the week doing a few fun “brainy”
activities, as well as learn about the four lobes of the brain. Listen for he
terms: frontal,
parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes at home! (We will continue this unit
after spring break.)
