We are moving along in the creatively, thought-provoking
novel A Wrinkle in Time. We will
focus on the literary genre of science fiction this week by finding traits of
it within various mentor texts. Most of the reading of this novel will take
place in class, but if your child takes reading home, I encourage you to read
alongside your child due to the higher level vocabulary L’Engle uses. :)
In Grammar, we will focus on changing the tense of a
text. Regarding writing, we have been focusing on persuasive writing. Last
week, the students worked collaboratively on a persuasive piece about extending
their bedtimes. This week, we will make the cross-curricular reference to
History by having the students writing a persuasive essay to Lincoln about
ending the Civil War. You will see your child taking home writing assignments
to work on each day this week.
Your child will learn the meaning of
the idiom “all that glitters is not gold”, as well as more Latin and Greek
words. We have a Kingdoms meeting on Wednesday of this week, so your child will
discuss the virtue of honesty.
History/Geography: This week in our study of
The Civil War, the students will read and listen to Lincoln’s renowned Gettysburg
Address. They will be presented with a ONE-HUNDRED POINT extra credit opportunity
for memorizing and delivering the same famed speech to the class. This, of
course, is not something all of the students must attempt; however, I encourage
it! The students have until the end of the year to memorize it if they choose to. :) We will also learn about the battle of Vicksburg, as well as the
importance of submarines, spies, photography, and Morse code during this time
in history.
Science: The students are being tested
on their knowledge of the nervous system on Monday. We will then move right
into our study of the endocrine system. The kids will learn about glands and
the ultimate goal of our bodies: staying in homeostasis! The kids will learn terms
such as: pituitary gland, hormones, hypothalamus, thyroid, adrenal glands,
adrenaline, pancreas, diabetes, etc. Stay tuned!
